Each session is shaped around what the student brings that day: a topic from school, a test coming up, or a question they are stuck on.
Most sessions draw on the same few things, listed below, in whatever order and proportion the day needs.
Length
60 minutes, or 90 at A-level
Between sessions
A little recall practice and one past-paper section
Records
A written note of every session, which you can see at any time
What a session draws on
- Recall: a few questions from memory on earlier topics, since the evidence suggests that recalling something holds it better than re-reading it.
- One method at a time: worked through first as an example, then as a partly solved problem, then by the student alone, explaining as they go.
- Exam questions, marked against the board’s own mark scheme, so the student can see where marks are actually lost.
- A summary in the student’s own words.
- A little work to do before the next session.
